Summary
But when Sonic let him have the Master Emerald, it meant letting the Emerald Hill folk rest in the Mushroom Hill Zone. He goes to check on them, and sees that the people are making the best of it. They're already working hard to fashion the giant mushrooms into homes.
Knuckles looks down at a crater, a scar from the battle with the Death Egg. As he leaps down into it, he notices a small round portal with some ancient writing on. Knuckles curses that he never was good at translating it but it's something about a Dream Country, but as he moves the rocks away it glows and sucks him in.
Knuckles shoots out into a completely weird place, at which point he realises that the writing actually said the *Nightmare* Country; now known as the Special Zone!
Knuckles curses; the Special Zone is easy to get into but impossible to get out of. But then he hears a voice saying, "put all thoughts of escape behind you, villain". He turns around to see the Omni viewer, who explains that he knows all about his alliance with Robotnik.
Knuckles tries to explain that his information is rather out of date, but Omni tells him to meet his doom, to meet Chaotix - Guardians of the Special Zone!
And out leaps Vector, Mighty, Espio, Charmy and Nack.
