Summary
He awakens in a cave, which he recognises as the Emerald Mine -- here he hopes to take a new Master Emerald. Here the Spirit tells Knuckles the tale of the Kohenyu.
Long ago, the dinosaur-like Kohenyu roamed the Floating Island. Then, along came the echidnas with weapons. The Kohenyu had never seen weapons before. It took a long time but gradually all the Kohenyu were destroyed.
Knuckles realises that he does know the story... but that they tried to save the Kohenyu by not killing them all...
SPIRIT> The Herd was many but we had only twenty males. They were
theslowest....
KNUCKLES> And so we killed them all! I didn't know, nobody knew!
The ribcage that forms his prison begins to crush down on him, as the Spirit rants about paying for his sins...
Knuckles digs underneath and escapes. The skeletons attack again. Across the room, Knuckles finds the soul crystal. It appears that the spirit of the Herd is kept alive by that. The skeletons are on one hand, attacking; the Herd spirit is pleading for him not to strike. The Spirit keeps the skeletons charging, not beliving Knuckles' integrity. Knuckles raises hishand...
