Summary

Knuckles is busy at work in the Emerald Chamber when the alarm goes off. He dashes outside but the Mushroom Hill Zone looks peaceful. He's wondering what the matter is when he turns around to see Tails disappearing through some weird green portal. Thinking that he's being kidnapped, Knuckles leaps through after him and finds himself in the Nameless Zone!

The people mistake him for Tails' 'sidekick', Sonic. Tails hastily explains (with a bit of embarassment) that the letters he wrote to his people made them think that he was the hero of Mobius, and Sonic his sidekick; and now, every time they want help, they call on him. But Knuckles plays along and pretends to be Sonic - he thinks it's a relief to be in a zone where the people don't worship the 'little blue show-off'.

The situation is explained: the Enchanter Kings have been captured by Trogg, the evil goblin from the Land Beyond. First, they sent Errol Blackthorne to attempt a rescue.

"And Errol never came back?" Knuckles guesses. But he's pointed towards where an giant goblin monster is standing. It's purple, hideous, has a big sword and his torn clothes look a lot like Errol's.

This is what has become of Errol Blackthorne.
