So Robotnik draws up a more worthy opponent and from a pile of rubble forms Commander Brutus. Robotnik decides to even the odds and brings Tails back to life - but Sonic's happiness is short-lived as Tails punches Sonic before turning back to her true form of Metamorphia, the shape-shifter.
As Sonic battles, he knocks Brutus into Plasma. Plasma explodes and Sonic spins away in the blast. Robotnik cackles that round 1 goes to Sonic as Sonic spins into the next round of torture.
Then arrives Overlord Sidewinder and his dodgy crew. Lord Sidewinder never had Chaotix to stop him, so now he's master of the Special Zone. Sonic spins into action... or not. Robotnik took away Sonic's speed and skill - simply because he can! But as the battle wages, Sidewinder whispers his true aim to Lightmare: stealing Robotnik's power so that he can rule the universe. Robotnik goes mad and turns Sidewinder and crew to stone.
Sonic tries to be smart alecky, but Robotnik doesn't care: he promises that he will break his spirit and then destroy him as he begs for mercy. Sonic mentions that he's still such a coward that he had to take away his powers, but at least Knuckles won't see him embarassed.
Robotnik cackles, up for the challenge. He returns Sonic's powers and sends him to the Floating Island - just as Sonic hoped.
Sonic runs into the Emerald Chamber hoping to share his plan with Knuckles - but Knuckles punches Sonic (Sonic comments that it's getting to be a habit), claiming that any enemy of the mighty Robotnik is an enemy of his.
Sonic and Knuckles run into the Emerald Chamber where they find the machine that Robotnik used to absorb the energy.
Meanwhile, Robotnik reaches 100 and follows them. He sees Sonic standing by the machine and shoots it away. "Only I know how to operate that machine!" he says: "did you really think such a foolish plan would work".
But, Sonic reveals; he just had to distract Robotnik so that Knuckles could get into position. Knuckles blasts Robotnik with the grey emerald - the control emerald. Robotnik shrinks and shrinks as the power drains, and he eventually disappears. It seems that having become accustomed to the emerald energy, he couldn't survive without it.
As Sonic and Knuckles tour the Emerald Hill, Knuckles explains that it's worked and that nobody remembers Robotnik being a supreme force. But Sonic is still gloomy. Knuckles asks why, considering they just had an incredible victory against a foe that could destroy them with a thought. But as the two walk off down a path, Sonic grumbles that there's no point in having a great victory if nobody remembers you've won it!
