Summary

Sonic, Tails and Knuckles race outside to see Robotnik leering down on them. Robotnik cackles that he has powers that Sonic couldn't begin to understand - to demonstrate, he shoots an eye-beam at him. Sonic passes out.

When he wakes up, he figures that Robotnik must have dumped him in the slum he finds himself in. He finds Amy and Johnny patrolling the street, being tormented by a couple of Troopers. Sonic smashes them up, reminiscing about how he missed doing that. But then he turns to Amy and Johnny, remarking that he thought they could handle a couple of Troopers by this time. The guys don't recognise him; Johnny thinks it's a trick and wants to go, but Amy plays along. He explains that this desolate slum is the Emerald Hill Zone.

Johnny panics as from the shadows arrive Oscar the Pig and his Death Squad. Oscar the Pig is an alias of Porker Lewis (see "On the Run" STC 121-124). Porker can't find Sonic on the databases - he remarks that it's as if he doesn't exist. Sonic smashes the Death Squad badniks and turns to ask Porker what's going on. Porker cowers with fear.

Robotnik appears at this point. He explains that this is Mobius if there had never been a Sonic the Hedgehog, and that he rather likes it this way. Without Sonic, Porker had never had a hero to look up to and give him courage - he points to the cowering Porker and says "look at him, Sonic. He's terrified of me. My most devoted slave". Similarly, Amy and Johnny had never formed the Freedom Fighters.

Sonic panics and asks what happens to Tails. Robotnik's face grows bigger and more leering. "Ah, your cute little friend," he says, "what a tragedy. Do you remember how you first met him, Sonic?". Sonic recalls: he met him in the Swampland Zone when he pulled him out of the swamp.

"Except," Robotnik reminds him, "you weren't there to save him. You never existed."

As Sonic collapses with grief, Robotnik's huge face cackles behind him.
