Summary
Sonic waits for the bad guys to exit, and then stops pretending that he's being crushed - that's just to see what Robotnik is up to. He bashes the stone hands and rushes off to the zoom tube.
But Robotnik has already let the six emeralds back to merge with those that allow the Floating Island to fly - the twelve emeralds become six once more. Unfortunately, reflects Knuckles, the controlling Grey Emerald is lost. Robotnik takes out a device and explains that this would act in place of the grey emerald, controlling the Chaos energy - then, he jumps into the beam! Knuckles realises that Robotnik has betrayed him just as Sonic and Tails show up. Robotnik zaps Tails turning him to glass - Sonic just manages to catch him, to prevent him shattering. But even as Robotnik grows into an all-powerful giant, Knuckles pulls from behind his back the Grey Emerald. Although he had said it was lost, Knuckles had lied. He knew that once Robotnik had the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he would find out for sure whether Sonic or Robotnik was telling the truth. Using the grey emerald, Robotnik's energy is drained and he's sent back to Mobius. Tails is restored.
Sonic asks Knuckles to join the Freedom Fighters, but he refuses - one day, he believes that his people will return from the stars and on that day, he'll be waiting for them. Nonetheless, as Sonic and Tails walk off they can't help but feeling that they haven't seen the last of Knuckles...
