"In the caverns beneath one of the new zones, a brave group of heroes is on a last chance mission to save the world! Amy Rose! Tekno the Canary! And Shortfuse the Cybernik!"
Grimer tags along (but only to save his own neck). Amy is worried that Sonic's in danger - he ran off ahead.
Sonic certainly is in danger. Robotnik, powered by energy diverted from Earth and Mobius, has him in the palm of his hand. But Shortfuse shoots him; Robotnik retaliates with his eye lasers.
Sonic leaps at Robotnik and rips away the cables that are pumping energy into him, but it's too late - the energy is inside him now! He's faster than Sonic.
Amy calls on Tekno to use her intellect to think of a way to sort Robotnik out - but Robotnik waves his hand and the girls shrivel into old age.
Sonic and Robotnik fight, and there's this exchange:
SONIC> Do you seriously WANT to destroy the world?
ROBOTNIK> YES! You people HAD your chance to become my MINDLESS BADNIKS and you BLEW IT!
Tekno meanwhile sees that the cables are dangling loose, power from Mobius still flowing through them - she persuades Shortfuse that he could harness that power.
Robotnik grabs Sonic shouting "got you! It's GAME OVER, Sonic!" and begins to electrocute the hedgehog. But Robotnik feels power draining from him - Shortfuse is channeling it back to Mobius.
Sonic spins free and punches Robotnik shouting "Now who's the fastest?"
But Shortfuse feels the stress on his armour - the machine explodes and Shorty is free of his badnik suit (which Robotnik imprisoned him in, in STC 46).
Meanwhile, back at the Emerald Hill, Tails notices flowers springing up. Knuckles replies that there is still hope, even as a lightning storm blasts away the ground.
But as Sonic faces off against Robotnik, the cavern begins to collapse - Shorty thinks that they'll never be cable to get out in time. So Sonic grabs his buddies and run for it, saying "says who?"
Robotnik shouts to Grimer to start fixing the machine, but Grimer wants to get out of here. Robotnik leaps for the cables shouting "SHUT UP! I must have POWER! MORE POWER!"
The roof caves in and the last we see of Robotnik is him and Grimer looking up and screaming "NOOOO!" as the rocks fall.
Back in the Emerald Hill Zone, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shorty and Tekno are gathered. Sonic shakes Shorty's hand and thanks him for his help; Shorty intends to get back to life as Shorty the squirrel now, but Tekno could always build him new armour if he wants.
Amy reflects that the planet looks refreshed and better than ever; Tails wonders what's in store for them in the future. New adventures, guesses Sonic, and as far as he's concerned, he says with a wink - the more dangerous the better!
