Summary

In the Launch Base Zone, Robotnik crows loudly. Soon the Death Egg will be fully operational; all it lacks is a power supply. And if Sonic gets in the way he'll face the one badnik he can never hope to beat! Sonic and Knuckles arrive in the Lava Reef Zone where Knuckles is in for quite a shock - Robotnik has parked his Death Egg on the top of the volcano! And as if things aren't bad enough, Robotnik sends a nasty bunch of Eggrobos to finish the heroes off. Each of the Eggrobos have camera eyes and an audio link so that they speak with the voice of Robotnik himself!

However, Knuckles smashes a lava pool and destroys the badniks in one swoop before having a nasty feeling. He leads Sonic to the Hidden Palace where he finds that, true to his fears, the Master Emerald is gone!

Sonic makes some joke about "let's hear it for Knuckles, Guardian of the Chaos Emeralds. Hey, buddy losing these is getting to be a habit." Knuckles is less serious - without the Master Emerald, the island will soon lose power and crash.

Sonic looks up at the Chaos Emeralds and notices that they have become a lot bigger. Knuckles explains that while Sonic had them they became drained of most of their power.

A light from the corner attracts their attentions. Sonic gasps, seeing a figure behind, standing on the Master Emerald, that he thought was long dead - Metallix, the Metal Sonic!
